GROWING UP DIFFERENT

On December 30, 1982, Scott McGinn, DJ Long and Billy Trainor, debuted their new band, GROWING UP DIFFERENT, at Girard’s in Baltimore.   GROWING UP DIFFERENT was a techno-pop group who focus was to perform songs outside of the confines of a traditional rock band.  They enjoyed considerable success on the mid-Atlantic circuit from 1983-1986.

THE TWINS

After FACEDANCER III disbanded in early 1982, roommates Scott McGinn and DJ Long decided to form a comedy act and called themselves THE TWINS.  These singing comedians  played the local Washington/Baltimore comedy club circuit from Spring 1982 until Fall 1982.   They were the new wave Smothers Brothers, but instead of doing stand-up comedy, they were sitting in lawn chairs on stage.

TIDBITS

Billy Trainor grew up in the same neighborhood as Tim Tanner and they went to Langley High School, although a couple of years apart.

There is also a connection with Paul Reed Smith and Tim Tanner and Jeff Adams. Before Paul became a famous his brand of guitars, he made a guitar for Tim and that was most likely the first guitar he ever made. Jeff Adams was so impressed with this instrument, that he went out and found an antique curly maple dresses and asked Paul to turn it into a guitar for him as well.   Once the guitar was complete, Jeff was not satisfied with it, the complaint being that it was too heavy. Jeff thought that maybe the finish was adding to the guitar’s weight and even had Paul refinish is a few times.  But that didn’t work and Jeff ended up returning the instrument to Paul. Sometime thereafter, while attending a Santana concert, Paul met Carlos Santana and gave the guitar to him. Santana loved it and the rest is history.

THE RAVYNS

In the early 1980’s, David Bell joined THE RAVYNS, an extremely popular Baltimore band who’s claim to fame was a song they wrote and recorded, “Raised on the Radio” that was included on the “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” movie soundtrack.
